Industry Leader Felix Lian Shares International Marketing Strategies with MSc IBM Students

His notable achievements include quadrupling ASEAN sales revenue between 2010 and 2019, delivering consistent positive EBIT growth for a decade, achieving a 53% sales turnaround in China within two years, and successfully expanding an international firm into four Asian markets.
Mr Lian holds an MBA (Strategy) from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) from Curtin University of Technology, Australia. He is also a graduate of the Singapore Command & Staff College.
Real-World Case Studies in Global Marketing Strategy
During the guest lecture, Mr Lian presented several engaging international marketing case studies that sparked strong interest among our MSc IBM students. A key discussion explored how global brands adapt their marketing strategies to succeed in diverse cultural and consumer environments.

Students were particularly interested in how multinational brands such as McDonald’s and KFC adapt their products to reflect the tastes, traditions, and preferences of local markets. By tailoring menu offerings to different regions, these companies are able to maintain strong global brand recognition while remaining relevant to local audiences.
Balancing Global Consistency with Local Market Adaptation
Mr Lian also highlighted an alternative global marketing strategy adopted by some international brands. Rather than significantly modifying their products, certain companies maintain a consistent core offering worldwide.
Starbucks, for example, continues to focus on its primary product—coffee—which remains largely unchanged across markets. Instead of altering the product itself, the company adapts elements such as store design, interior ambience, and architecture to reflect local culture and appeal to the surrounding community.
This comparison provided students with valuable insights into how multinational companies balance global brand consistency with local market adaptation—an essential concept in international marketing and global business strategy.
Mr Lian concluded his sharing with several memorable marketing quotes, including one by Dan Zarrella: “Marketing without data is like driving with your eyes closed.” The quote highlighted the growing importance of data-driven decision-making in modern marketing.
Inspiring Future Global Business Leaders
The session was highly engaging, with students actively asking questions about the case studies and even presenting their own examples to seek Mr Lian’s perspectives and professional advice. Hanbridge Institute would like to thank Mr Lian for taking the time to share his expertise and for extending the session to encourage a meaningful Q&A discussion with our students.
