Hanbridge Institute Certificate in English Proficiency

Introduction

The Hanbridge Institute Certificate in English Proficiency programme is an intensive driven programme designed with the aim to provide the knowledge and skills for learners of English as second language. This programme is a robust and in-depth learning course that strive to prepare students in general and academic English to undertake higher academic programmes. A strong ability to read, speak, listen and write to meet the rig our of higher academic education qualifications means that one must be able to recognized implied meaning from various reference and research sources.

The programme will allow students develop skills in portraying arguments both orally and written form, including the skills needed for powerful and convincing presentations.   It is critical for students who wants to do well in higher academic programmes to be able to deliver professional, independent course work and assignments based on findings, arguments and conclusions. Skills in the English language will allow students to be able to open and hold discussion in class and group work with relevant justification.  This programme will allow students to develop professionalism in the readiness for higher academic with in-depth knowledge of the English language in an academic, social and business settings.  The programme objectives are:

  • Develop English proficiency to meet entry requirements for students who wants to enter higher academic education programmes
  • Gain English language skills in writing, reading, speaking and listening as part of study skills and competency needed for academic writing and oral presentations in a higher academic programme setting
  • Improve overall English language skills for students who wants to improve their English proficiency from non-native English speakers

Students who successfully completed the programme and met English proficiency requirements can use the results to gain entry to other Hanbridge Institutes higher education programmes subject to academic entry requirements of the higher education programmes.

Class Duration:

The course lasts for a period of 9-months dependent on English Proficiency.

Class hours:

Mondays to Fridays (Exclusive Public Holidays); Morning session: 9.00 am to12.00 pm; Afternoon session: 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm

Maximum 1:41

Admission Requirements:

  • Minimum age: 12 at the point of registration
  • English Proficiency: IELTS score of 1.5 or equivalent and above
  • Internal English Placement Test score of minimum equivalents to IELTS score of 1.5

*Applicants who have higher IELTS score, Internal English Placement Test score or equivalent may be given exemptions to maximum of two modules (Module CEP1 and Module CEP2) subject to the approval of Academic Board.  

Graduation Requirements:

Achieving overall passing rate of 50% for the four components: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing.

Course Structure and Synopsis

Module CEP 1-English Proficiency
Students will receive intensive listening, speaking, grammar and writing practices at foundation level.  Students will be able to gain knowledge and skills in the English language to hold basic speaking and writing skills on common and familiar topics and be able to achieve writing short messages. Aim to acquire competency skillsets to achieve a banding of IELTS 4.5.

Module CEP 2-English Proficiency
Students will be exposed to grammar and words which will assist them in their academic, social and business communication skills at intermediate to higher intermediate levels.  Through writing practices, oral presentations and class discussions, students will be able to communicate with appropriate grammatical structures while developing sufficient vocabulary base. Students will be able to produce reasonable explanations and arguments on abstract thoughts and topics associated to academic and business context. Aim to acquire competency skillsets to achieve a banding of IELTS 5.5

Module CEP 3-English Proficiency
This module allows students to use the English language effectively for academic, social and business purposes in the context of reading, listening, speaking and writing. Students will gain the skills to express ideas fluently on complex subjects at advanced level. Aim to a acquire competency skillsets to achieve a banding of IELTS 6.0.
