Hanbridge Institute Certificate in Standard English

Introduction

To help learners improve their English language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening). We have 6 levels of programmes that are designed to meet the needs of learners from beginner to advanced levels to better equip students with English language proficiency for work and education objectives.

Class Duration:

3 months per level, 18 months levels 1 to 6

Class hours:

Mondays to Fridays (Exclusive Public Holidays); Morning session: 9.00 am to12.00 pm; Afternoon session: 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm

Teacher-Student ratio:

Maximum 1:41

Admission Requirements:

  • Level 1:  Minimum Age: 12 in the year of enrolment; Academic Level: PSLE or equivalent; Language proficiency: No English proficiency requirement
  • Level 2:  Minimum Age: 13 in the year of enrolment; Academic Level: Secondary 1 or equivalent; Language proficiency: Primary 4 or equivalent; Internal Examination: Proficiency Test Level 1
  • Level 3: Minimum Age: 14 in the year of enrolment; English level is equivalent to Primary 6; Academic level is Secondary 2 or equivalent. Internal Examination: Proficiency Test Level 2
  • Level 4: Minimum Age: 15 in the year of enrolment; Academic Level: Secondary 3 or equivalent; Language proficiency: Secondary 1 or equivalent; Internal Examination: Proficiency Test Level 3
  • Level 5: Minimum Age: 16 in the year of enrolment; Academic Level: Secondary 4 or equivalent; Language proficiency: Secondary 2 or equivalent; Internal Examination: Proficiency Test Level 4
  • Level 6: Minimum Age: 16 in the year of enrolment; Academic Level: Secondary 4 or equivalent; Language proficiency: Secondary 3 or equivalent; Internal Examination: Proficiency Test Level 4

Graduation Requirements:

Achieving overall passing rate of 50% for the four components: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing.

Course Structure and Synopsis

Certificate in Standard English (Level 1) Beginner
The course is targeted at Beginning English learners but with sufficient academic maturity to comprehend the course content and concepts. Throughout the course, learners will be exposed to simple vocabulary used in daily conversations, with simple grammar skills like punctuation, tenses and preposition to allow learners to communicate and express ideas. These skills will be used in sentence construction and subsequent oral communication and listening assessments for the course completion requirements. The course content should be equivalent to up to Primary 3.

Certificate in Standard English (Level 2) Elementary
The course is targeted at Elementary English learners but with sufficient academic maturity to comprehend the course content and concepts. Throughout the course, learners will be exposed to simple vocabulary used in daily conversations, with simple grammar skills like punctuation, tenses, and preposition to allow learners to communicate and express ideas effectively. These skills will be used in sentence construction and subsequent oral communication and listening assessments for the course completion requirements. The course content should be equivalent to up to Primary 5 and 6 equivalents.

Certificate in Standard English (Level 3) Pre-Intermediate
The course is targeted at Pre-intermediate English learners but with sufficient academic maturity to comprehend the course content and concepts. Throughout the course, learners will be exposed to pre-intermediate vocabulary usage with complex grammar skills like tenses, adjectives, adverbs, and conjunctions to allow learners to communicate and express ideas more efficiently and accurately. These skills will be used in sentence construction and subsequent oral communication and listening assessments for the course completion requirements. The course content should be equivalent to up to Secondary 1 equivalent.

Certificate in Standard English (Level 4) Intermediate
The course is targeted at Intermediate English learners but with sufficient academic maturity to comprehend the course content and concepts. Throughout the course, learners will be exposed to intermediate vocabulary usage with complex grammar skills like tenses, adjectives, adverbs, and conjunctions to allow learners to communicate and express ideas more efficiently and accurately. These skills will be used in sentence construction and subsequent oral communication and listening assessments for the course completion requirements. The course content should be equivalent to up to Secondary 2 equivalent.

Certificate in Standard English (Level 5) Upper-Intermediate
The course is targeted at Upper Intermediate English learners but with sufficient academic maturity to comprehend the course content and concepts. Throughout the course, learners will be exposed to intermediate vocabulary usage with complex grammar skills like tenses, adjectives, adverbs, and conjunctions to allow learners to communicate and express ideas more efficiently and accurately. These skills will be used in sentence construction and subsequent oral communication and listening assessments for the course completion requirements. The course content should be equivalent to up to Secondary 3 equivalent.

Certificate in Standard English (Level 6) Advanced
The course is targeted at Advanced English learners but with sufficient academic maturity to comprehend the course content and concepts. Throughout the course, learners will be exposed to advanced vocabulary with complex grammar skills to allow learners to communicate and express ideas in a sophisticated and professional manner. These skills will be used in writing and subsequent oral communication and listening assessments for the course completion requirements. The course content should be equivalent to up to Secondary 4 equivalent.

Note: Students who wish to enrol into Hanbridge Institute’s higher learning programmes will need to take the Certificate in English Proficiency.
